A Review of Waltz with Bashir

Waltz with Bashir has to be one of the best documentary I've ever seen. The fact that with animation you can get away with showing traumatic events without scaring your audience is a great Idea.
This movie shows off PTSD, Child soldiers getting blown up, Massacres, Porn, Gore and such which I think if it was shown of in the traditional film would really scare the audience so much that the wouldn't watch the entire film. it is only at the end of the film where you realize that the majority of the events depicted in the animation are REAL events. This documentary also pulls some dark humor without really mocking anything that happens.

The only think I would disagree with in this documentary is the ending of the 'Main Characters' story ends abruptly. We follow the main Character trying to figure out what he had done in the Massacre and goes an finds his old friends to put the pieces together. When he figures it all out, we don't get to hear or see his reflection. I understand that this is a documentary and you don't have to follow a plotline. But i think just a little bit of the main character admitting to something or realising the horror of the situation would of really made the ending.

A question in the homework asks if the animation distracts from the events. I don't think so. I think it helps because of reasons stated above.

The Art style reminds me of Commando Comics which are all about war. It fits so well.

If Waltz with Bashir can pull off a tragedy. that I can imagine that this one would too. I would like to add this one to the list of things to watch. The artstyle is particularly nice to look at here too.

I think overall Animation mixed with documentaries should happen more often. Especally in 2D. I thing when you have a 3D documentary, you tend to focus on realism. which isn't a bad thing but with 2d you can have the choice to have a style. Sometime style attracts. And if you documentary has a huge amount of information which may be important, use the cool artwork to keep your audience interested.
Personally id rather watch something animated depicting a historical event than watching a person sitting on a chair talking about the events.
