Back to the Future Scene Review
What does the scene tell us about the narrative?:
There is a man working on time travel. His associate is good friends with the owner of the house as he has the keys to this house (or knows the location of said keys.)
What does mise-en-scene inform about the character?:
The scene tells us that the owner of the house (Doctor Emmett Brown) like to keep track of time with all of the clocks in the room. Further in to the intro we can see that the owner is an inventor. As we can see there are robotic contraptions doing some simple chores. The TV turns on to say that some plutonium has been stolen. When Marty walk in and we was his skateboard move in the room we later see that the Doc has stolen the plutonium. The Doc is a busy man as the automated contraptions have been doing automatic things for too long. (Aka the Toaster the dog food contraption, the automatic coffee machine?)
How does the camera work, editing and sound support the story?:
The ticking of the clock enforce that this is a time travel film. The intro up to where the skateboard hits the plutonium box is one continuous shot. During this there is an advertisement for a specific vehicle on the radio. Then we see Marty play with some knobs and then get blasted away by the humongous speaker. A direct parallel to what happens later in the film, as when the reveal that the doc has been using plutonium for his experiments up to that point the film has been one continuous timeline. When Marty has to escape, he has to run into the Delorean (a specific type of vehicle), flip some knobs so that he can get blasted back to the future.
