Speech:
Hello Everybody,
here is my 2 Slide Power Point to explain what I am doing for my research
project. I wanted to ask myself a Question. Can I recreate the style of a Pulp Science
Fiction Paperback Novel? For those of you who don’t know, my main goal for this
year is to focus on Retro Futurism, ‘the use of a style or aesthetic considered
futuristic in an earlier era’. And for this project I though to myself what
better way to explore more about Retro-futurism than recreating what inspired me
to do the project in the first place. The 7 inches by 4.3 inches paperback
novel. You might have seen these books anywhere, in a library, in an op shop or
somewhere lying around at home.
The art
style that I want to base my work of is the paperbacks that were made between late
1910’s to the late 1990’s. The artists models I’ve named on screen are just a
few of the many inspirations for the project I want to do. Because there is
some artist that are yet unnamed. Frank R. Paul is the original artist of this
genre, creating art for Amazing Stories, starting in 1926. Grant Duncan Is the
only modern artist model I could find as of this moment in time, he the Art
Director of the Hello Games title. No Mans Sky’s. The Pulp Genre, or The Retro Sci-Fi
Genre is not as popular as it used to be as I can’t find many tutorials or how
to’s on the genre. But that is the challenge. And what I do have is a lot of
pictures that I have been collecting over the past month. Here is one sub category
of my Pinterest Board.
As you can
see there are many different styles and different colour choices. I
specifically want to use bright colours in my work. I want an alien landscape,
maybe some action and want to draw my spacesuit I designed for 3D integrated
into the work. The image of this is in the next slide. I haven’t decided how
many of these covers I want to do, 1 is minimum and 3 is maximum, it depends on
how much time I will have.
So, my idea is
exploring mediums to recreate this art style, as I don’t know which one will
look best. I have seen evidence of spray paint from two YouTube videos. I have
also seen evidence of Oil Paints from another and even Airbrushing. I will play
around with those. If doing the artwork physically doesn’t work out for me,
there is also digital painting.
After making
the initial artwork, most likely on a large canvas. I will have to scan and shape
the image to shrink it to 7 inches by 4.3 inches, print it on some light card
and then replace the cover of an already existing book. I will even write a pretend
title and blurb to make it more like the old book format.
