Christopher Nolan is a great director. The movie Inception is a great movie, He seems to capture good character development.Interstellar is also a fantastic movies. Dunkirk is a film ive been meaning to see.
He loves large formats (Imax format or 35mm film). And has resisted moving to the digital age.
His scenes unfold with the character. Inter-cutting scenes. Scene Geography. Lens proximity. Keep it real.
The Stuffed Birds in psycho have a bigger meaning than originally thought
The Shower Scene (psycho)
What was the director’s intention of the shower scene?
To install suspense and a change in narrative.
What is the importance of the scene to the story?
This is a game-changing scene in the film. The character Marion Crane has been the center of attention for most of the film at this point. You watched her steal, avoid being arrested and go through this journey to escape her old life. You know the character and assume that this character is the one you'll watch to the very end. The Shower represent Marion be cleansed. That all her sins she committed in the past are being washed away. But as soon as that shower curtain has been pulled back with a shadowed figure with a knife armed in hand. You realise that this character is going to die, and there is nothing to stop it. You, the audience member, now has to find someone else to cling too.
What techniques were used to convey intended meaning?
Camera angles and sets were crafted specifically to have hidden meaning. When we first see the murderer the camera has deliberately given you space to see that this person is coming. That was to add deliberate suspense. The white walls around the shower could represent the potential clean slate of Marion. The Water from the shower once represented cleansing of the sins. But when Marion is Killed, the water represents Cleansing of life. The Drain of the shower also represents this notion as the camera follows the blood in the water to the drain, The camera goes into the drain then fades into Marions lifeless eye.
