Dissertation Draft

Project Framing and Resolution
Title & Question: Can I recreate the style of a Pulp Science Fiction Paperback Novel?
Name your project: A Callback to The Paperback

Question driving your project – has it evolved over the semester?: Due to Covid-19, The lock-down that followed and the change to a Digital Gallery. My project has evolved from the original idea. The idea went from recreating a physical installment from a physical artwork. to a digital installment from a digital artwork.

Aims, Objectives & Context
What do you want to find out?: I wanted to find out if it was possible to recreate the art style of a paperback novel successfully.
What do you want to discover?: I wanted to discover if their was a taught way to recreate this style. Whether through tutorial or article. Turns out this is a art style which is not taught. I came across only three videos on recreating the style used in paperback. All I  really had was the art reference itself.
What did you want to create?: Size: 7”, 4.3” Paperback with a Cover, Spine and Blurb.
What skills, techniques, methodologies did you want to utilise? I wanted to try and do this project physically with Airbrushes, Spray Paint or Oil Paint but due to lock-down, lack of material and time constraints. I could not achieve this. So I used my second option. Creating the painting digitally.
Does your project fit within a larger plan/project? Yes. My main goal this year is to learn Retro Futurism. "The use of a style or aesthetic considered futuristic in an earlier era". This project is one step to understand the theme. As of this project. My Comic and 3D Character and Animation are also exploring the subject.
Describe where it fits. Does your project serve to push your development as a practitioner?: I believe so. Understanding one art-style could be useful for certain projects. And in this current decade, everything seems to be solely based around nostalgia of previous ideas.
Describe how this is important to your professional development: I want to improve my art-style. Currently my style is rather bulky with thick line work. Retro-Futurism work does not commonly have that line work. So knowing more than one art-style could give me more variety in the future. From a professional stand point its better hiring someone who can do multiple things rather than one specific thing.

Conclusion/Findings:
What was the outcome of your project? Consider both the final product and how
successfully you’ve resolved your question. Consider what you’ve learnt through this
project: I am very proud with what I produced during this project. My answer to my own question would be yes, I can recreate the style of a Pulp Science Fiction Paperback model. The question however is not only for me to decide. The viewer is the one who can give me the true answer for the question. As of this writing I have had positive reviews of my work. So I can say that I have achieve my question.

Body of work:
This is where your blogs are critically important. If you’ve been using your blog as a repository for your thoughts, progress, inspiration and research through the semester, then documenting your body of work will be a matter of sifting through your blog and pulling together the threads that make up your project. Eliminate extraneous leads and false starts – unless there is something there that you’ve used to push your project forward.

Context of Project:
Where does your project fit within the world of creative endeavour?: Creating an art style which isn't produced a lot anymore keeps the genre alive. Showing the style could inspire others to recreate it in there own way.
