Artist Statement

Edwin Nicholson Artist Statement BSA603

For this project I wanted to ask myself a Question. Can I recreate the style of a Pulp Science Fiction Paperback Novel? The answer is up to you, the viewer to decide. Here I have used Photoshop to recreate the old pulp style of the late 1910’s to the late 1990’s. Three Works with Three different subjects and colours.
My main goal this year is to focus on Retro Futurism, ‘the use of a style or aesthetic considered futuristic in an earlier era’. I had experimented on the theme last year with my Digital BSA142 Diploma of Screen Arts Project and an artwork for Digital in Certificate of Applied Arts in 2017.
Originally, I was planning to use Airbrushing for the work and to print the covers onto a real paperback so you could see it physically. But due to the Covid-19 outbreak and lock-down, I wasn’t able to do so because I lacked certain materials and I was a bit restricted.
This completely Digital Version should provide an insight to what I was originally planning.
This work is based on Nostalgia as I wanted the viewer and myself to connect with the work. Which is something I tried last year with my research project ‘The Eventide Sector’ Based a project to re-create the style of Rod Serling’s ‘The Twilight Zone’. With that I specifically wanted to broadcast the subject on an old TV to get that real old nostalgic feel to it. And it worked. So, this project is similar in the fact that I want the same result. Nostalgia.
