How well was worked received in New Zealand?
According to the NZONSCREEN website, Geoff was a leading figure in the new wave of Kiwi filmmakers that emerged in the 1970's. He had a gift for action and comedy, which won him a wide audience. He directed three classics of the Kiwi film renaissance. Goodbye Pork Pie (1980) was considered to be New Zealand's first local Blockbuster.

How well was their worked received overseas?
He spent a decade in Hollywood after his movie The Quiet Earth (1986) which sold to around 80 countries and gained a cult following. It is also to note that his film Utu (1983) many reviewerers raved. Le Monde called it a "unique astonishing film" and Spectacular but intimate" and New Yorker critic Pauline Kael singled out a feeling of exaltation and spirituality" hovering over the film. Pork Pie sold to 32 countries.
