For my first Assignment in Screen Arts, I watched 'Casablanca', which was filmed in November 26th 1942. Starring Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine, Ingrid Bergman as Iisa Lund and Paul Henard as Victor Laszlo.
Watching Casablanca made me realize why this movie was rated 3rd on the 2007's top 100 American movies of all time.
This movie is very dialogue heavy and requires you to pay attention, as almost every minute there is something being said. but luckily the dialogue is very relevant to the story and isn't boring to listen to.
There are many creative camera shots in this film as well, and scenes transition smoothly between each other.
This plot focuses around 3 characters, one being Rick Blaine, a Saloon manager in Casablanca. At the start of the film he is a very neutral guy, and "doesn't stick his neck out for anybody" but is revealed to have some backstory on picking sides, which comes into play in the later part of the movie. During the story Rick bumps into Iisa Lund and Victor Laszlo. Isia is shown that she has some prior backstory with Rick which sets Rick off and throws him into the deep end. Iisa is infact a previous lover of Rick that left him heartbroken when he decided to leave to Casablanca to escape the Germans. This complication makes things interesting and set the tension of the movie as the main plot of the film comes to play. ESCAPE CASABLANCA.
because people get arrested A LOT in Casablanca, and the Germans are coming for pretty much all the main characters.
It was a very good film, especially for its time. It does show that a movie doesn't have to be in full colour and have tonnes of CGI to be effective. This film just used stock footage and i'm assuming 5 sets to tell their story. I would like to watch it again someday.
