2. My main Artist Models are Frank R. Paul, Grant Duncan, Chris Foss, Peter Elson, Chris Moore and Angus Mckie. Other artist are included but these are the main six.
3. Frank R. Paul is the first proper Science Fiction Artist. I think the one that really started the genre. He illustrated the Covers of Amazing Stories, Air Wonder Stories, Science Wonder Stories and Wonder Stories. Pulp Science Fiction Magazines that were released in 1926. Frank's art consisted scenes of bright colours caught mid action, as you can see here.
4. Grant Duncan is Hello Games Art Director. His work features in No Man's Sky, a video game about discovery. One thing that does make this game special is its art design, It has Bright Colours and contrasting landscapes. This Modern take on Retro Futurism keeps true to the original art style of the early 70's.
5. Chris Foss is an Illustrator for many science fiction book covers. He's done work with many authors including Issac Asimov. E.E Doc Smith, Arthur C. Clarke, A.E Van Vogt and Philip K. Dick. His covers are darker, but he does have an eye for architecture and spaceship designs.
6. Peter Elson is an Illustrator, He has almost the same style of Chris Foss, But Elson does have a little more variety and does tend to use gradients.
7. Chris Moore is also an Illustrator and has many art books under his name including Journeyman - The art of Chris Moore, Parallel Lines and Fantasy art of the New Millennium. His artwork is much darker, and he tends to experiment with multiple camera angles, with his dark colours, there is also his vibrant colours to contrast.
8. Last but not least we have Angus Mckie. With work in The Terrian Trade Authority collection and The Dome: Ground Zero, He has pretty much the same style to Elson and Foss, but he has more lighting effects.
9. So, how can I recreate the style and nostalgia of a Pulp Science Fiction Paper Novel? First, I have to find the right Medium to do this. The most common medium is to use paints, make a large canvas and create an artwork. Scan it then print it on the cover. The other alternative is to recreate it digitally.
10. One opportunity I have been given is to try out airbrushing which is very exciting. Here is the airbrushing kit, and it came with a variety of inks.
11. The experimentation with the Retro futurism genre started way back in 2017 back when I was doing digital in Certificate of Applied Arts and continued in 2019 when I was doing the Diploma of Animation last year.
12. This artwork is the first experimentation. Most of this was painted digitally but I started by sketching out a rough drawing then Inking the outlines. I scanned the drawing the filled the image with solid colour. The image turned out nice, but I knew that I could do better. I captured the colours and the gradients but the picture to me looks a bit rough on the edges.
13. In 2019 for BSA142 Diploma of Screen Arts I made Retro Science Fiction my digital subject and produced a variety of artworks on Photoshop. Here is the best works in my opinion, all used different colours and styles. This is Entering a strange world, a work inspired by Casper David Friedrich’s Wanderer above the Sea. Here I experimented with silhouettes and very light colours as I wanted to replicate a foggy atmosphere. What I learned from this work was I need to work on backgrounds, make rocks look more like rocks. Here they look a little smudgy and of course I need to work on depth. As here there is none.
14. Red falcon was an experiment on drawing vehicles. For a reference I used a 3d model. This image taught me that I need to get better a drawing shape and vehicles at perspectives, also got to work on atmosphere.
15. The beacon is simple, but I do like it because of it. But the world is very flat. Got to work on that background as there is a lack of one. Frank R. Paul may have had plain backgrounds but one thing that made it work was that everything in front of that was moving, there was action. In this piece it quite static.
16. Another favourite of mine is Max the Astronaut. Its got an angle, its got a nice colour scheme. But for this current project I want to steer a little away from the dark blue and black colour scheme. I want to have bright colours that pop.
17. The last one here, ‘Crash Landing’ is a continuation of the artwork I created in 2016. I learnt here that Outlines don’t need to be used. My art style mostly has black outlines. And this work doesn’t. Again, still need to work on backgrounds.
18. Now here is my current experimentation. This is Layla Travis, My character for 3D animation this year. For this project I am planning to have at least one artwork featuring her. I am starting to design a spaceship which will also feature on one of the works. For my Character Board for 3D I practiced and tried to recreate the style and I believe that I have done well and am ready to create maximum 3 works of art to scan, print and stick onto an old paperback. Then I will display the book on a plinth for all to see.
19. Timing is important when it comes to this assignment. So, in the next few weeks I will have to practice with mediums other than digital, create more concepts and get the best way to make a new paperback cover. I will be putting all my findings onto my blog post.
20. Here are my references for this proposal and thank you for listening.
